The $300 laptop… is it for real?

Published by dibocc at 9:33 am under Uncategorized Edit This

Short answer: Yes, it is.

Long answer: What you need it for has a big impact on whether or not you should spend money on it.

Let’s go over it.

The $300 (actually, $255) laptop made news last year when it billed itself as the ultimate solution for those who can’t actually pay for a standard computer. Cheap, small and practical, it has enough of everything to allow you to write, surf the internet and run some basic programs without any trouble.

Product Features

  • Dimensions WxDxH - 8.86″ x 6.30″ x 0.79″ ~ 1.26″
  • Weight - 2.0 lbs
  • Processor: Intel Mobile CPU
  • Display Type: 7″ Wide
  • Display Resolution: 800×480 (~WVGA)
  • Processor: 571 MHz Intel Celeron
  • RAM: 512 MB
  • Operating Systems: LINUX
  • USB Ports:  3
  • Hard Drive: 2 GB
  • Modem: None (you will need an outside connection in order to be able to access the internet; a LAN port is available)
  • Battery: 2.8 hours

If you’re looking for a portable machine that costs little, this may be a great solution. It’s also a great way to have computer access without having to carry your expensive laptop around, or to save money by saving a (much) cheaper desktop computer and complementing it with this one. In the end, you need to weight the pros and cons of such a small machine, but I wouldn’t discount it at all, especially if your alternative is to have no computer at all.
